In accordance with Senate Rule 15, the Secretary of the Senate prepares a calendar for each day’s order of business. The calendar contains the schedule of bills, resolutions, and memorials that the Senate can either consider as a body or in one of its committees of reference. When the Senate considers legislation as a body, the bills, resolutions, and memorials are placed at the front of the calendar. Legislation to be heard by the Senate can be scheduled through the end of session. Senate committee of reference schedules are published for two weeks past the calendar’s publication date. The Senate schedule is fluid; with a vote of the Senate, scheduled items can be laid over to a later date or considered out of order, or new items can be brought up on special orders.

The Colorado Constitution requires the Senate keep and publish a journal of its proceedings. [see Colo. Const. Art. V, § 13.] The Senate journal records the previous day’s business in successive order. The journal includes everything from legislation passage and vote counts to tributes and committee reports. In accordance with Senate Rule 14, the Senate journal is printed after the close of each day’s session, and each legislative day, before proceeding to any other order of business, the journal of the preceding day is corrected and approved by the Senate as a body. The cumulative journal from each legislative session is published and kept by the Senate for future reference.

The Secretary of the Senate is required by Senate Rule 13 to keep a docket of all bills, resolutions, and memorials introduced in the Senate or received from the House of Representatives. The Senate and House status sheets show the current status of all bills, resolutions, and memorials that have been introduced during the legislative session, including every action taken on each piece of legislation through the legislative process.
