Legislative Assistant Job Description

A legislative assistant in the Office of Legislative Legal Services (Office) supports the Office's core functions by:

  • Editing legal memorandums and other written Office work product, including presentation materials, for grammar, spelling, punctuation, comprehensibility, and adherence to Office style and format requirements;
  • Inputting edits and revisions into electronic documents;
  • Conducting policy and legal research;
  • Under the supervision of an attorney, reviewing executive branch agency rules to determine whether they are within the rule-making authority of the promulgating agency; and
  • Summarizing Colorado Supreme Court and Court of Appeals cases that apply or interpret the Colorado Constitution, the Colorado Revised Statutes, or Colorado Court Rules.

A legislative assistant may also:    

  • Assist legislative editors and attorneys in completing their duties as necessitated by workload demands;
  • Verify and update existing editorial content and write new editorial content for the Colorado Revised Statutes;
  • Perform general administrative and clerical tasks such as data entry, photocopying, and delivery of legislation and other written Office work product to Office staff, legislators, lobbyists, other legislative staff, the Governor's office, or the public;
  • Proofread written Office work product by reading aloud with another person;
  • Prepare charts, tables, and other graphical presentation and research materials;
  • Learn and utilize various functions of our internal software program; and
  • Complete special projects and other tasks, which may include administrative tasks, assigned by his or her supervisor or by a member of the Office Management Team.
