Under current law, physician assistants with fewer than three years of practice experience are permitted to perform certain activities only under the supervision of a physician. The bill removes this supervisory relationship and instead requires a physician assistant with fewer than 5,760 hours of practice experience or who is beginning practice in a new specialty to engage in formal collaboration with a physician. Physician assistants with at least 5,760 hours of practice experience must engage in informal collaboration with a physician. The bill establishes parameters for collaborative plans, and specifies that a physician may enter into a practice agreement and collaborative plan with up to eight physician assistants at one time. The bill also establishes requirements for insurance carriers regarding the reimbursement of physician assistants.
