Senator Hill invited the presenters from
Penrose Elementary in Colorado Springs School District 11, Gretchen Bitner
and Tamara Sobin, to come to the table.  They distributed several
handouts to the committee [Attachments A, B, and C].  Ms. Sobin provided
background information about the school and explained the school's decision
to implement a project-based learning model, which is an inquiry-based,
hands-on approach to learning.

Ms. Bitner discussed several of the specific projects that students have worked on and explained the relationship between project-based learning and standards and assessments.  She talked about the positive impact the new teaching and learning style has had on the school's students.  The presenters answered questions from the committee.



Conf 18-Colorado School For The Deaf And The Blind Board Of Trustees - Favorably Refer to Full Senate - Consent Calendar

Senator Priola took over as committee chair.  He invited Carol Hilty, Superintendent of the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind (CSDB), to come to the table to introduce the appointee to the CSDB Board of Trustees, Teresa Raiford.  A copy of the Governor's appointment letter can be found as Attachment D.  Ms. Raiford spoke about her background and about why she would like to be appointed to the board.  She answered questions from the committee.

Conf 18-Student Leaders Institute Executive Board — Colorado - Favorably Refer to Full Senate - Consent Calendar

Senator Priola invited the reappointees
to the Colorado Student Leaders Institute (COSLI) Executive Board to the
table.  Celeste Archer, Executive Director of COSLI, provided background
information about the program and introduced the reappointees to the board:
Jason Hanson and Christena Faraci.  Copies of the Governor's appointment
letter can be found as Attachment E.  Ms. Faraci and Mr. Hanson introduced
themselves to the committee and spoke about their prior service on the
board.  Several student members of COSLI introduced themselves and
spoke about their experiences with the program.

The students continued to discuss their experiences participating in COSLI. Committee discussed ensued.

changes to the accountability system for the elementary and secondary public
education system to strengthen the accountability system for the benefit
of students.  Senator Todd distributed amendments L.007 and L.008
[Attachments F and G].
