Theresa Holst, Legislative Council Staff, and Natalie Lord, Form+Works Design Group, presented designs for the new Capitol Visitor Services Desk. Ms. Holst discussed the work of Visitor Services. Ms. Lord presented the new designs [Attachment A]. She discussed the benefits of the new location and explained that the existing desk would remain operational until the new desk is completed.

Ms. Lord described various elements of the new Visitor Services desk, including storage space, a display case, and transaction desks. She described the design of the built-in pieces.

Ms. Lord responded to a question from Mr. Petri, explaining that the pieces of the new desk will not attach to any of the existing historic features of the Capitol. She explained that there would be one penetration of the marble to run electrical wires. Committee members commented on this design.

Adam Perkins, Downtown Denver Partnership, presented to the committee about the 5280 Loop. He described the several central Denver neighborhoods involved in the project, and the benefits of connecting these areas.

Mr. Perkins discussed the benefits of increasing the number of trees and making nature accessible in the central city. He described the steps the Downtown Denver Partnership has completed in planning for the 5280 Loop.

Mr. Perkins suggested that the plan of the 5280 Loop would help create the "Capitol Mall" feel on Sherman Street proposed in the Capitol Complex Master Plan. He explained the project's next steps, with the intention of having a vision document completed in fall 2018.

Capitol Basement Entrance Area - Committee Discussion Only

Damion Pechota, Legislative Council Staff, discussed the Capitol basement entrance area. He explained that the committee's Criteria and Procedures designates the area as a place for displays related to the state's schools and children, but that there are currently no displays in the space.

Mr. Pechota noted that two display cabinets from History Colorado have been located in the south basement area. He explained that some of the larger Governors' portraits could also be displayed on the walls. He presented other ideas for the space.

Ms. Contiguglia noted the importance of preserving fragile artifacts and the need for special display case features. She also noted the high level of activity in this area of the basement. Mr. Pechota responded to these comments.

Mr. McNulty commented on the possibility of displaying portraits in the basement, expressing concern that children would be able to reach the frames.

Committee members discussed the Governors' portraits that are not currently being displayed. Mr. Pechota explained that the Western Center for the Conservation of Fine Arts would be restoring one of the portraits, which will be funded from the committee's Gold Fund. He further discussed the funding challenges facing the restoration project.

Matt Becker, Legislative Council Staff, presented the signage and wayfinding project for the state Capitol. Committee members received information sheets on the project from Arthouse Design [Attachment B] and staff [Attachment C].

Mr. Becker described his work with Arthouse Design on the project and noted that a final plan would be presented to the committee in August.

Representative Lontine discussed office numbering in the Capitol. Mr. Becker noted that room numbers in the building are tied to the fire panel. He also discussed accessibility plans in the signage project.

Lance Shepherd, Department of Personnel and Administration, discussed the Capitol roof project and the portions remaining to be completed. He explained that the next project in the Capitol building would be restoring the Old Supreme Court Chambers.

Marilyn Eddins, Chief Clerk of the House, noted that she has removed a plaque to David Rice of the Colorado Cattlemen's Association from the west wall of the second floor of the Capitol, and she requested to locate it outside the House Lobby. Mr. Pechota noted that another plaque from the Cattlemen's Association is currently located on the rose onyx in the rotunda stairwell.
