Theft of Motor Vehicle Parts or License Plates

Any person who removes, detaches, or takes a part from a motor vehicle or aids, abets, or assists in  any such act is guilty of theft.  Theft of a motor vehicle part results in:

  • a class 1 misdemeanor if the value of the part involved is less than $1,000, or if the part is a license plate;
  • a class 5 felony if the value of the part involved is $1,000 or more but less than $20,000;
  • a class 5 felony if the person commits theft of motor vehicle parts two or more times within six months, and the aggregate value of the parts involved is at least $1,000, but less than $20,000;
  • a class 4 felony if the person commits theft of motor vehicle parts two or more times within six months, and the aggregate value of the parts involved is $20,000 or more; or
  • a class 3 felony if the value of the part involved is $20,000 or more.
