HOUSE COMMITTEE ON STATE, VETERANS, & MILITARY AFFAIRS
Date Feb 22, 2018
Location LSB A

SB18-044 - Committee Discussion Only/ Lay Over

12:09:31 PM

Representative Landgraf, bill sponsor, presented Senate Bill 18-004.  The bill allows private employers to give preference to military veterans in hiring, promoting, or retaining a veteran over another equally qualified applicant or employee as long as certain conditions are met.  The bill requires that if adopted by the employer, this policy be written, publicly posted, and referenced on the employer's job application.  An employer that adopts and applies a veteran's preference policy in accordance with the bill is not committing a discriminatory or unfair labor practice.  The Department of Labor and Employment may promulgate rules that establish proof that an individual is a veteran and eligible for a private employer's preference employment policy.

12:09:55 PM

Representative Landgraf answered questions from the committee.  She distributed amendments L.001 and L.003 [Attachments A and B] to the committee.

12:18:16 PM

Representative Foote made comments regarding the bill and laid over the bill for action only to a later date.
